Downtown Crime & Safety Survey Results

Thank you for taking the time last week to complete the Downtown Sioux City Crime & Safety Survey!

One of the most notable findings from the survey is that many incidents go unreported. Without those calls, it is much more difficult for law enforcement and our team to understand where patterns or problem areas are developing. Your experiences shape the data that helps inform our service providers to act. When issues go unreported, we lose the visibility needed to deploy staff, officers, or resources where they’re needed most.

Please call when something happens,
even if it feels small. Reporting helps us quickly identify where attention is needed and respond more effectively.
The non-emergency number is (712) 279-6960.

Resources to protect your business or property
Several respondents shared uncertainty about what tools or strategies are available to better protect their spaces. One of the most important steps is ensuring the Police Department has an up-to-date local contact for your property. This allows them to respond more quickly and, when needed, connect directly with you. Officers are also available to walk through your building with you to identify practical improvements, whether for staff, tenants, or customers, that can strengthen safety and security. Many of these strategies are simple and effective, and some may be options you weren’t aware of. You can get that information to them or request a walk through by calling (712) 279-6960.

If loitering is a concern, placing “No Loitering” signage can help establish expectations.
And if you need assistance with lighting or camera upgrades, we have a grant available to support those enhancements.

What’s Happening Now

• A new Downtown Safety & Services Task Force is forming.
Over the last few weeks, the City, along with several local organizations, have come together to establish a coordinated task force. This group is currently defining its structure, duties, and daily responsibilities. One of its primary functions will be having a consistent, on-the-ground presence in the downtown area, connecting individuals with services and addressing issues proactively.

• Expanded overnight patrols.
Over the past few months, overnight patrols in parking ramps and stairwells have increased. This has had a positive impact and continues to strengthen the safety presence downtown.

Moving Forward Together
Many of these efforts are already underway, and others are in active development. We want to ensure your concerns are addressed promptly and thoroughly, and your participation in this process is essential. Thank you again for your time, insights, and continued investment in a safer, stronger, Downtown Sioux City.

If you have questions or would like to discuss any of the results or resources further, please feel free to reach out to us!
