Traffic along Pierce Street between 4th Street and 5th Street will be impacted due to the replacement of a water main; during this period, on-street parking will be prohibited, and traffic will be reduced to one lane.
The contractor, SuBSurfco, LLC, began construction on Monday, August 12, 2024, and plans to have the project completed within 35 working days, weather pending.
This project includes the replacement of a 12” watermain with a new 16” water main. Paving replacement will be limited to the water main trenches only. During construction, Pierce Street will remain open for through traffic with parking restricted in the work zone. Sidewalks will remain open for pedestrians and business access.
The “Construction SUX” campaign, launched by Downtown Partners, is designed to bring attention to the businesses along Pierce Street between 4th and 5th Streets that remain open throughout the current water main replacement project. Playful signage and messaging are popping up throughout the area, encouraging residents and visitors alike to continue supporting their favorite local spots during the construction.
While the necessary upgrades are underway—including replacing the water main, reconnecting limited water service lines, and paving streets —the campaign serves as a lighthearted reminder that even though access may be less convenient, Sioux City’s downtown businesses are still very much open for business.
Businesses directly impacted during this project include; Access Systems, The Boat House, Short Staffed, Sooland Boxing Club, Smith and McElwain Law Offices, and Vangarde Arts. All are eager to welcome customers and could use your support.
Public parking is available at Martin Luther King Jr. Transportation Center and Rivers Landing Parking Ramp and are connected to Downtown Sioux City’s skywalk system. First hour and weekend parking is free in all downtown ramps.
