Pedestrian Counters Installed Downtown

Have you noticed one of our counter boxes downtown?

Downtown Partners has placed infrared pedestrian counters at key locations throughout downtown Sioux City to better understand how people move through and interact with our streets, sidewalks, and public spaces.

Although they might resemble cameras, these devices do not record images, audio, video, or any other identifying information. Instead, they use an infrared beam. Each time someone passes and disrupts the beam, a simple count is recorded. No personal data is collected.

This information helps us measure foot traffic patterns, identify the most active corridors, support storefront and public-space improvements, and strengthen grant applications and economic-development efforts that keep downtown vibrant and welcoming.
